Today, Friday 5 August, the RCNP received the AENOR Carbon Footprint certificate at a ceremony attended by the Mayor of Palma, José Hila; the President of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol; the territorial director of Murcia and the Balearic Islands of AENOR, Soledad Seisdedos; the CEO of Trueworld, Marco Mendoza; the director of Corporate Sustainability of Global Omnium, Juan Luis Pozo; and the president of the club, Emerico Fuster.
On Friday 5 August, during the event held as part of the United Nations Race to Zero campaign, held at the Real Club Náutico de Palma, AENOR, with the sponsorship of Global Omnium, presented the Validated Carbon Footprint certificate in the presence of the President of the Balearic Islands Government, Ms Francina Armengol Socías, and the Mayor of Palma de Mallorca, Mr José Hila Vargas.
● The entire project is part of the environmental strategy developed by the local technology company, TrueWorld, which has implemented its environmental and innovative solutions with the collaboration of Global Omnium for the calculation of the carbon footprint and AENOR for its certification.
● Global Omnium, as sponsor of the carbon footprint measurement, has carried out all the necessary calculation and preparation process and AENOR has audited the calculation in accordance with the international standard ISO 14064:2018.
The 40th Copa del Rey MAPFRE becomes the first regatta in the world to officially validate the carbon footprint in accordance with the international standard ISO 14064, with a scope that covers the entire life cycle necessary to carry out a sporting event of this dimension, following in the wake and leadership of other events such as the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell 69th Conde de Godó Trophy, a leadership that the Real Club Náutico de Palma joins, taking another step forward in terms of the contribution of value to our society.
The Mayor of Palma was in charge of opening the event, and he did so by confirming that "this is the first regatta in the world that plans the process and organisation to achieve the minimum greenhouse gas emissions. The fight against climate change is a commitment of society as a whole, which is achieved when society makes it its own and works on it. The RCNP, which is a symbol of our city, makes this reality its own and works to combat it. We, as the city council, support this initiative, which seeks to go one step further with each edition".
The truth is that, to date, the 40th Copa del Rey MAPFRE is not only a pioneer in the commitment to calculate and neutralise gas emissions, but it will also try to reduce them in line with the global objective set by the United Nations and will implement a programme to support conservation and environmental education projects.
Doing it in the Balearic Islands, moreover, takes on even more importance, as the President of the Government explained during the event: "The Balearic Islands, as an island region in the middle of the Mediterranean, will be one of the most affected, and there is no better commitment than caring for the environment in order to leave our children and grandchildren in the best possible conditions".
"If this regatta already puts us in the showcase of the world at a sporting level, today we add a fundamental value that I am very grateful for. The fact that this regatta has certified our commitment to present and future sustainability puts us in the world spotlight for what we want to be, which is innovators and pioneers in the fight against climate change. My congratulations to the RCNP for its commitment and for working not only for the present, but also for the future", added Armengol.
The president of the RCNP, for his part, took advantage of his speech to recall that "we are a living heritage of this city, of which we feel part and to which we wish to contribute all our experience, knowledge and colour, and therefore the general commitment of the Real Club Náutico de Palma must include actions aimed at the conservation and protection of our most precious asset, the sea. It is a real pride and honour to have received this certification today, which accredits us as a green and environmentally aware club".

The carbon footprint is a tool for determining, assessing and communicating the impact of an activity on climate change. An impact derived from an economic model based on the generation of energy, materials, resources and services from the consumption of fossil fuels is considered the main cause of climate change.
Thanks to the collaboration between Trueworld and Global Omnium we have focused on making the 40th MAPFRE King's Cup a sporting event that starts the path towards emission neutrality and positive climate impact in accordance with the Race to Zero campaign of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)". Marco Mendoza, CEO of Trueworld, explained that "the project is based on the idea of not just analysing the data but monitoring and transmitting the data on the impacts of this regatta and the environmental impacts of the bay in real time, plotting them in Blockchain technology to guarantee the veracity and transparency of the data and making them available to the public and the scientific community. On a technological level, we are creating a digital twin of the bay by deploying probes, buoys, marine drones, plotters and other instruments to be able to measure in real time everything from noise pollution to atmospheric and marine pollution".
The director of Corporate Sustainability of Global Omnium, Juan Luis Pozo; the CEO of Trueworld, Marco Mendoza and the territorial director of Murcia and the Balearic Islands of AENOR, Soledad Seisdedos.
According to Juan Luis Pozo, Sustainability Director of the Global Omnium Group, "when a competition starts at sea, whether we are aware of it or not, we are writing its sustainability logbook. Sailing brings values such as companionship and sacrifice, at the same time as it facilitates the learning of knowledge related to the sea and prepares people to know how to react in complicated situations. It instils values as necessary as respect for the environment, by observing with affection and respect this crucial natural environment for the survival of our planet in which the effort and sacrifice to reach the goal has its development".
For her part, Soledad Seisdedos, AENOR's regional director for Murcia and the Balearic Islands, stated that "there are more and more sporting events that are concerned about neutralising their emissions, thus caring for the environment and sustainability. In the case of the Balearic Islands, this is even more relevant as they have a very pressing seasonal nature and limited resources. From our organisation, we provide organisations with solutions that help them face this challenge. Our certificates recognise their best practices and help them to generate confidence among their audiences of their real commitment to the planet".
