Sustainability at the 42 Copa del Rey MAPFRE: Innovation and Comittment

Marco Mendoza presenting the Bay of Palma Report

TrueWorld, in its third year of participation, has been responsible for calculating the carbon footprint of the event, measuring the impacts of the activities throughout all their scope. In addition, it continues with the monitoring campaign in the Bay of Palma. This work includes the evaluation of water quality and the presence of microplastics. TrueWorld has also submitted a preliminary report summarizing findings from the bay's ecosystem. The event not only measures, but also offsets the emissions generated, supporting local projects and raising awareness about environmental challenges through workshops and educational exhibitions. The Stenella, Galaxie and Bluecircle boats have been instrumental in collecting data during the regatta, serving as environmental monitoring platforms.

Presentation of the Sustainability Plan

The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE Sailing Cup stood out for its innovative Sustainability Program, presented at the Real Club Náutico de Palma. This program included various initiatives designed to minimize the environmental impact of the event. that is, the emissions generated during the pre-event and assembly, during the regatta and during post-regatta disassembly.

Carbon Footprint Measurement

The calculation of the Carbon Footprint takes into account the greenhouse gas emissions generated in the assembly, celebration, and dismantling of the regatta, which runs from July 27 to August 3, 2024.

The direct emissions generated by the organization (Scope 1), the indirect emissions associated with the importation of electrical energy (Scope 2) and the emissions that are outside the control of the organization such as the transportation of attendees or sailors are taken into account. among others (Scope 3).

Smart Net Zero Events

The SMART NetZero software is a management platform that offers a 360º and real-time view of the environmental impact generated by the event.

A rigorous calculation of the carbon footprint of scopes 1, 2 and 3 has been carried out and once the impacts have been calculated and verified, emissions will be offset through local conservation projects. In this way, the event seeks to generate a positive impact on the environment and the local community.

Integrated blockchain technology ensures the authenticity and reliability of event-related information; thus demonstrating your commitment to global decarbonization objectives in a transparent manner.

Measurements are made in real time and of a variety of key environmental parameters related to decarbonization. These parameters include: carbon footprint, water footprint, environmental footprint, consumption and energy.

Additionally, our system integrates with reliable third-party data, such as area-specific weather information, air quality, and noise pollution levels.

Palma Bay Impact Report

The report of the 40th Copa del Rey was a first approach to the study of the impacts of human pressures in the Bay of Palma. A lack of monitoring was found, which highlights the urgency of promoting a social and scientific exercise, where the installation of an environmental monitoring network for prevention, maintenance and sanitation in the Bay of Palma is promoted, which would allow improving the management of the Palma Bay.

The report has laid the foundations to continue the pioneering initiative that began with the scientific campaign of the 40th and 41st Copa del Rey with the aim of beginning to collect long-term data that will allow us to know how the waters of the bay and its relationship with the impacts of human pressures.

Scientific Campaign for the Third Consecutive Year

For the third consecutive year, the solar and electric boat Stenella carried out the scientific campaign that takes place during the Copa del Rey, focused on environmental research through the collection of samples and the use of sensors and robotics to monitor the bay of Palm.

Education workshops and Environmental Awareness Experiences

The Love The Mediterranean Initiative (LTM) connects public-private institutions, foundations, associations and third sector entities to create activities for children and young people as well as the community in general in the three main areas of action. Health, Literacy and Dissemination.

We organize Sustainability Workshops on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. These workshops, aimed at organizations that support children and young people in disadvantaged situations from various foundations such as Hadas Kids, Nazareth, Es Grec and Amar Ukraine among others.

Supplier foundations such as CleanWave and Palma Aquarium or the Love The Mediterranean initiative team, together with the participation of Olympic sailors from the RCNP team, made it possible to carry out nautical and knot workshops, talks on the sport and its values, workshops of biodiversity and its conservation; as well as trips on electric boats to carry out citizen science activities with a significant impact on these young people in vulnerable situations and in reintegration or adaptation processes.

These initiatives not only seek to bring the most disadvantaged young people closer to the Copa del Rey regatta, but also to provide them with knowledge, experiences and opportunities for their personal development.

Corporate Outings

The Stenella and Galaxie boats, equipped with technology and sensors for measurements, were used during the regatta to carry out corporate outings in the field of science, sports and corporate relations.

The Galaxie School Sailboat is a sailboat converted to 100% electric with a unique history of commitment and service to altruistic projects in professional training, social insertion, the practice of sailing, nature conservation and environmental awareness and education.

During the 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE, corporate outings and visits were made during the workshops to bring the world of the sea and sports closer to all interest groups.

The Stenella has participated daily in collecting samples and monitoring for this year's scientific campaign. The data collected will serve to complement the Preliminary Report of the Bay of Palma.

Sustainability Corner

This year, we have created the Corner of Loving the Mediterranean, a space dedicated to the sea, on the terrace of the RCNP. This Corner offers informative, educational and artistic material related to maritime conservation and has included four fixed exhibitions:

- Biodiversity poster (Marilles Foundation)

- Sheets in various languages of the Scientific Objectives and Challenges (of Sea Observers)

- Artistic Exhibition of Marine Fauna paintings (by Vicent P. Tejos),

- Corner on the protection of turtles and other threatened animals (from Palma Aquarium),

- Photographs from the previous edition of the MARE contest (Expo de Cara al Mar)

- Informative material on the plastic free movement. from CleanWave Movement as well as his stories from “Fora Plàstics.”

The 42nd Copa del Rey MAPFRE  was not only a top-level sporting event, but also a model of sustainability. We hope that this inclusive and conscious approach to the environment and climate action promises to inspire other sporting events to follow suit.

Year 2017: the One Planet Summit is held in Paris - second anniversary of the Paris Agreement - 12 organizations that work in Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT - Blockchain) agree to collaborate and establish a global initiative, the Climate Chain Coalition is born. Two years later, more than 100 companies and institutions are part of this chain with a main objective: to drawdown climate change. Year 2020: TrueWorld Organization (TW) is established, an organization that monitors, in real time thanks to Blockchain technology, all the factors that affect the environment and climate change to make all the information available to society in an accessible and universal manner. TW joins the CCC to pool resources and knowledge and achieve solutions against climate change globally. The DLT system allows measuring, reporting and verifying the impact of all types of operations or processes and the mobilization of climate finance from diversified sources. The potential of Blockchain technology is key in the process of climate change action. It can improve the transparency, accountability and traceability of green gas house emissions as it can support companies and public entities in their process of providing and tracking data in an honest, standardized and accurate manner. The blockchain, unlike centralized networks, was designed to avoid monopoly control of the system. The technology records transactions in an open and permanent way, thus promoting transparency and security. Transactions are peer-to-peer thus eliminating intermediaries. Blockchain has different applications related to the fight against climate change. TW, in addition to the use of blockchain, gathers data and information through the use of smart sensor systems, which gives it the potential to automate and strengthen the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of the environmental impact projects. All of this results in an increase in trust among the actors involved in this type of projects. TW is committed to complying with the standards of truthfulness, transparency and innovation that the CCC has as principles, in addition to working under the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
